Adams Safety Training Supporting The Million Heart National Initiative

26th February, 2015, San Ramon, California: Adams Safety Training, which provides First Aid, CPR, and BLS training to the entire San Francisco Bay Area and other surrounding locations, is supporting a national initiative for cardiovascular disease prevention in order to increase awareness about heart health.

February month has been declared as “American Heart Month” under the national initiative “Million Hearts,” which is a collaborated effort of public health organizations and several non-profit and private organizations such as the American Heart Association (AHA). The initiative will enhance cardiovascular disease prevention activities across public and private sectors, so as to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. The initiative also aims to increase access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in workplaces, homes, schools, and other public places.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure, are responsible for one out of every three deaths in the country. The Department of Health and Human Services along with other health organizations launched the Million Hearts initiative to improve heart health across communities and help Americans live healthier lives. The initiative aims to improve management of the “ABCS,” which include taking Aspirin by high-risk patients, controlling Blood-pressure, managing Cholesterol, and Smoking cessation. This initiative calls for changes in the health care system by strengthening tobacco control, decreasing sodium and trans fat consumption in the diet. In the clinical realm, improving heart health is critical in light of increasing incidences of death because of cardiovascular diseases. Additional means of preventing death due to heart attacks and stroke include increasing access to AEDs, providing coordinated care and attending CPR and BLS training.

Adams Safety Training has joined the efforts of health organizations by reducing the AED costs. Adams Safety is supporting the “February is Heart Month” noble cause and wants to increase access to AEDs in public locations. The survival rates increase by 5%, if an AED is immediately applied to a victim of cardiac arrest, which is why, Adams Safety has reduced AED prices because this will lead to the availability of more AEDs in public locations, workplaces and hospitals. The step taken by Adams Safety will encourage more people to live heart healthy lives.

Which CPR class should I attend?

BLS Training, CPR Certification, Pediatric CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that is performed with alternating chest compressions with mouth-to-mouth breathing. It is one of the most basic types of medical training provided to people. It can be very useful when it comes to providing immediate medical help to a person who’s suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. By reviving the heartbeat and breathing, CPR can provide the much-needed oxygen to the brain. This can save the life of a person.

There are two different levels of CPR training – CPR for medical professionals and CPR for non-medical professionals. CPR training provided to non-medical professionals and paramedics is different. Below are the three main categories under which CPR training class fall –

Adult CPR classes
These are the most basic type of CPR classes that are ideal for non-medical professionals. For adult CPR classes, you don’t need any medical know-how. They are of short duration and are usually completed in less than an hour. In adult CPR classes, people can learn how to perform CPR on adults and children above 8 years of age.

Infant CPR classes
Infant CPR classes are ideal for people who spend too much time among children. These include teachers, babysitters and other non-medical professionals. This training enables coaches to provide immediate medical help to infants and children below the age of 8 years.

These are advanced CPR classes for medical professionals. Be it nursing students or dental assistants, it is essential for every professional in a doctor’s office to possess an advanced CPR certification. These classes cover AED, ventilation devices and two-person CPR techniques.  These classes are also called Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. Most hospitals and clinics have AED and it’s important for workers to know how it is used.

CPR training classes are for everyone. However, some people require CPR training more than others. Flight attendants, fitness instructors, social workers, construction workers, pool and beach lifeguards, jail personnel, teachers and child care providers should learn how to perform CPR technique. Importance of Basic Life Support

BLS Training

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the primary medical aid provided to a person in an emergency medical situation. This procedure can prove to be very helpful when it comes to saving the life of an individual. It is important to understand that the objective of BLS is not to ‘treat’ the person but to buy some valuable time until the emergency medical aid arrives.

BLS procedure is mainly used on people experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure. With this procedure, the breathing and heartbeat of the person can be resuscitated. However, it is important to provide professional medical care to the patient.

While BLS procedure can be very useful, it is important to provide it the right way! For this reason, great emphasis is placed on BLS training provided by professional institutes. The basics of CPR

CPR Certification

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that is of immense use in various emergency situations including heart attack or near drowning. CPR keeps oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until the victim gets medical treatment to restore normal heart beat and rhythm.

To perform CPR, keep in mind the acronym of CAB-Circulation, Airway, and Breathing. Circulation involves restoring blood circulation with chest compressions. You must put the victim on his back on a firm surface. Place the heel of one of your hand over the center of the victim’s chest and place your other hand on top of the first hand. Keep your elbows straight and position your shoulders directly above your hands. Now push down and compress the chest at least 2 inches. Push hard and give about 100 compressions in a minute.

Airway is performed to clear the obstructed airway. Put your palm on the victim’s forehead and gently tilt his head back. Then using your other hand, you must gently lift the chin forward to open the airway.

Breathing is the third step of CPR. It may involve mouth-to-mouth breathing or mouth-to-nose breathing if the mouth is severely injured or it can’t be opened. For mouth-to-mouth breathing, pinch the nostrils shut and cover the victim’s mouth with yours, making a seal. Give two rescue breaths. Give the first rescue breath and watch if the chest rises. If it doesn’t, give the second rescue breath. Give chest compressions to restore blood circulation. If the victim still doesn’t move, use an AED or Automatic External Defibrillator. You must continue with CPR until the victim shows signs of movement or emergency medical professional comes over.

First aid for insect bites and bee stings

First Aid Training

Insect bites can be quite troublesome. You may experience itching, stinging sensation, mild swelling, fever, hives, swollen glands, painful joints, and other severe reactions. By offering correct first aid to the victim of insect bites and bee stings, you can prevent the symptoms from getting worse and can also reduce the pain and suffering of the victim.

First aid for insect bites and bee stings

  • Move the victim to a safe area to avoid more stings. The first thing that you must do is remove the stinger. This would help prevent the release of the venom.
  • Now wash the area with soap and water and apply a cold pack to reduce the pain and swelling. To alleviate the pain, you may also give ibuprofen or acetaminophen to the patient. To provide relief from itching, you may apply a topical cream on the site of insect bite or bee sting.
  • If the victim is experiencing severe reactions, such as vomiting, hives, nausea, dizziness, faintness, or difficulty breathing, you must loosen his tight clothing and cover him with a blanket. Turn the victim on his side if there is vomiting or bleeding from the mouth.
  • If the victim is not breathing or he is not showing any signs of movement, begin CPR immediately.
